Legacy Of:

William  G.  Morton

Personal Legacy
William G. Morton was our engineer and the unquestioned leader of our enlisted crew. He was a very fine aircraft mechanic, a student of the planes tech manual and a skilled gunner.

He was decorated for having physically (bare handed) repaired severed flight control cables on a combat mission. He was credited with having shot down five enemy aircraft during his combat tour, the most of anyone in the 68th.

Upon completion of his tour he opted to remain with the squadron as our gunnery instructor. On Nov. 23, 1944 he received a direct commission.

After the war Morton went to Pilot training and remained in the AF. He flew fighters, and commanded a squadron in both Korea and Viet Nam.
