Memories and Biography

(Taken from a letter to Will Lundy)

I did visit my pilot's family several times until their death and attended Lt. Steinke's funeral when his body was returned in 1946.

After returning to the USA, I was at the U.S. Army Hospital, Topeka, Kansas during the summer and fall of 1945. In the fall of 1945, I appeared before a disability retirement board. They found me unfit for further services, due to my injuries and therefore retired me for disability as a first lieutenant.

I enrolled in college in February 1946, and attended college and medical school at the University of Missouri and the University of Colorado. I received my M.D. degree in June 1952 and have been in general practice since 1952.

I hope this will help you with your memorial to the men who did not return.

I would like to have a list of my crew and all the missions, which were completed, if this is available. All my personal records were lost and all I had was my memory.

If I can be of any further help to you, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Duane E. Mitchell

Dear Will:

I was so glad to receive your letter today. If my membership in the 44th has expired, it was an oversight. I certainly wish to join again.

I have retired from my medical practice as of 1996, mostly due to my injuries to my leg when I was shot down. It finally gave out on me, as well as my hearing after 43 years in practice.

I would appreciate a copy of the records on me and my crew. Send me a statement on the changes. Also, send me my dues for my membership in the 44th.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Duane E. Mitchell
