World War II
Memories and Biography
(Taken from a letter to Will Lundy)
2 August 1982
Yes, I did join the 66th Squadron at Will Roger's Field in 1942. At that time M/Sgt. Robert Ryan told me they had no openings on Flight Crews for Radio Operators, so I chose to stay on the ground after openings became available late in 1942 at Shipdham. So I was with the Squadron from mid 1942 to January 1945.
During the Battle of the Bulge, January 1945, the Army ground forces asked for volunteers in the medical and communications fields for service with the Army Ground Forces. Being a ground force radio operator in the 44th BG HQ., I volunteered and became a member of "C" Company, 166th Combat Engineer Bn. of the US 3rd Army.
This explains why I was not on the 44th roster when the group returned home in June 1945. You can see I was fortunate to have served with two very proud units.
Best regards to you and I hope the 44th BG will come through with enough funds to complete the "Plaque Mission." I am sure they will.
Again, best regards.
