(Taken from a letter to Will Lundy)

February 7, 1994

Dear Sir:

I had the pleasure of visiting the Queen Mary in Long Beach recently. I was pleasantly surprised to see the exhibits showing the overseas troop movements in which the ship was involved.

My own experience was to fly our B-24 Bowler from Kansas to England via Gander, Iceland, Nutt's Corner and Shipdham. There, our Vickers Group joined the 44th bomb group of the 14th wing under General LeMay. I started as copilot and then first pilot, doing 27 missions over Europe.

It seems so long ago - difficult to realize that I was part of it all.

I left the service in 1946 and became a dentist - practicing for 30 years in a little town (Montrose just north of Glendale). Retired ten years ago and am now living in Camarillo - surrounded by strawberry and celery fields.

Do drop me a line about your program. I'm interested in what you're doing.

Cheerio,

A. J. Helfenbein
