Dear Will:

Received your letter of 1 December last regarding Louis Trouve. He was a navigator on one or more of my missions in late summer, 1943. I finished my own combat tour that month. My crew, with another pilot, was shot up over Weiner Neustadt on my plane's very next mission. The plane crash-landed behind Allied lines in southern Italy with some of the crew. The others had bailed out over enemy territory. The plane was the "Queen Anne," No. 41-23936.

I believe Trouve was the navigator on a replacement crew coming into the 44th about the time it went to Africa during the Salerno-Anzio problems. I believe Trouve rejoined his old crew when the 44th returned to England from Tunis. This was probably very late September or very early October, 1943. The pilot of that replacement crew was Dick Comey and Trouve was probably flying with him after the return to England. If so, then I am sure Comey would have the answer to your inquiry.

If you want me to try to reach Trouve at that address in Elmont, New York, let me know. It is not too far from my residence. There is, however, still the possibility of the embarrassment you mention.

Good luck with your endeavors.

Best,

Joe

Dear Will:

I was with the 44th Bomb Group, 66th Squadron, when that unit first arrived at Shipdham in September, 1942. I started as a copilot and later became a first pilot. I finished my tour in September, 1943, after two trips to Africa. I spent another year in the 2nd Bomb Division Headquarters as a member of the Air Inspector's office.

I am looking for specific information about my tour of duty with the 44th.

Thank you.

Joe Flaherty
