Memories and Biography
(Taken from a letter to H. C. (Pete) Henry and forwarded to Will Lundy)
August 4, 1994
Thank you so very much for forwarding a copy of the 44th Bomb Group roster subsequent to our Hilton Head meeting. I was able to locate four of us on the roster and have heard from two of them - Brown and Lovgren. From the spring, 1994, Journal, we have learned that John E. Kirby recently passed away. Our pilot, Ernest Kyle, also died some time ago (about 15 years, now).
Although we flew some of the Pathfinder planes towards the end of the time, we were there and took on three extra crewmembers for those flights. The crew as originally constituted was:
Pilot Ernest Kyle Deceased
Copilot Robert B. Bratzel Bristol, TN
Navigator William J. Atkins (Unknown)
Bombardier Grover Ward Penberthy (Unknown)
Engineer Ernest D. (Bud) Brown Sebring, FL
Radio John E. Kirby Deceased 12/93
Gunner Gorman E. Dye (Unknown)
Gunner Harold A. Lovgren Princeton, IL
Gunner Raymond p. Rubczak (Unknown)
Gunner Henry Rankin (Unknown)
As you can see, five are unaccounted for with a recent address. You indicated that you could check against some other sources that might yield some places we could check. We would certainly appreciate this.
Ginny and I are sorry that some other travel precluded our attending the Kansas City meeting. We were counting on joining you there. Bet you had a great time.
